“The chimpanzee and the social sciences”

Humans have always been fascinated by the question of what makes us unique -what is the essence of human nature.  Not surprisingly, the social sciences have primarily focused on human behavior to answer this question.  In this seminar, we will take an alternative approach to this question, one that may seem counterintuitive at first sight.  We will focus on chimpanzee behavior as a way to explore the essence of human nature.  In four interconnected talks, we will examine some of the aspects that have been traditionally considered as human rubicons including things like culture, mind, and morality.  In some cases, the chimpanzee data will challenge a view grounded on human uniqueness whereas in others it will reinforce it.  This is to be expected since the question that we will tackle is not about whether there are differences (and similarities) between humans and chimpanzees but instead where those differences (and similarities) lie and how deep they are.
